The Scoop: Week of August 13th


Maintenance Activities:

  • Weed abatement in Community Park (trimming)
  • Vegetation clearing including cattails in the Butterfield Channel
  • Vegetation clearing in the Watsonville Channel

Major Projects:

  • 2018 Pavement Rehabilitation: O’Grady Paving is scheduled to start crack sealing the road during the week of August 20th. Affected residents and businesses will be notified prior to the start of construction on their respective streets; the project streets are located at:

    • Hill Road from E. Dunne Ave. to Diana Ave.
    • Llagas Creek Estates’ neighborhood (Adair Ct., Christeph Dr., Kay Springs Ct., Llagas Creek Dr., Llagas Vista Dr., and Serpentine Ct.)
    • Sparhawk Estates’ neighborhood (Eagle Springs Ct., Llagas Creek Dr., Sparhawk Dr., and Sparkhawk Ct.)
    • Sutter Boulevard from Cochrane Rd. to Butterfield Blvd.
    • Cochrane Road from Monterey Rd. to Mission View Dr.
    • Tennant Avenue from Church Street to the Highway 101 southbound off-ramp
  • Downtown Parking Garage: The top floor of the downtown parking structure will remain closed during times where parking demand does not necessitate use of all the spaces. The top floor of the structure will be opened during major events or at other times that parking demand necessitates it. Permanent improvements to the garage are currently in the design process and permanent reopening of the structure will be considered when parking demand requires the use of the top floor.   • Sunsweet Development:  The Sunsweet project is located on a 1.63-acre parcel on the southeast corner of the intersection of Depot St. and East Third St. The project is primarily four stories and consists of 83 apartments and 8,051 square feet of ground floor commercial space. The project is utilizing 83 of the 500 residential building allotments that were set aside for use in the downtown by the voters on May 19, 2009 (Measure A). Parking for the project will be provided below grade. Construction is underway.
  • Depot and East 1st Street Parking Lot: The City is developing a new parking lot at the corner of Depot and East 1st Street. It will have a total of 40 parking spaces with two of those spaces designated for handicap parking. The anticipated completion date is December 2018.
  • Veneto Project: This project is the development of 168 rental apartments and 74 single-family homes. The contractor is currently completing a road section on San Pedro Avenue between Condit and Murphy. This section of San Pedro is closed to traffic through mid-August.
  • Opa!Group Restaurant Complex: Willard Hicks is open. Tac-oh, Opa! and Mo’s are anticipated to open in the fall.
  • Main Avenue and Madrone Pipeline Restoration Project: Local groundwater sources supply 100% of Morgan Hill’s drinking water. The Santa Clara Valley Water District’s Main Avenue and Madrone Pipeline Restoration Project will restore existing infrastructure to replenish local groundwater aquifers to meet current and future needs. The project will have three phases. The first phase will occur within the Cochrane Road, East Main Avenue and Half Road public rights-of-way. Construction hours will be from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Water District will implement temporary vehicular and pedestrian traffic control to facilitate the safe construction of the project. The public will continue to have access to residential, commercial, agricultural and recreational properties and facilities throughout the project. Expect traffic delays due to construction. During construction of the first phase, use of Peet Road is recommended to bypass construction on Cochrane Road between Half Road and Cochrane Road. Elm Avenue is recommended to bypass construction on Cochrane Road between Half Road and East Main Avenue. For more information, please check the following link:
  • Tennant Avenue Sewer Upgrade Project:  The firm Mott MacDonald is designing a new 24” sewer main along Tennant Avenue between Railroad Avenue and Monterey Road. Construction is anticipated to start during the spring of 2019.
  • 2018 Infiltration and Inflow Sewer Rehabilitation Project: A construction contract was awarded to Pacific Underground Construction. The project repairs damaged sewer piping at ten locations (five locations near Llagas Road and the other five locations in the Holiday/Jackson Oaks area). Construction is underway at Crest Avenue and Longview Drive location.
  • Monterey Road Sewer Vault Lining Project at Llagas Creek Crossing: The contractor, National Coating & Lining, is procuring construction material submittals and permits for review and approval to begin construction in September 2018.
  • 25 – First Street Sewer Replacement: This project replaces deteriorated sewer piping serving businesses along the west side of Monterey between First Street and Main. The project will start construction once all the easements have been secured.
  • Lift Stations J and W Improvement Project:  Pacific Infrastructure Corporation (PIC) will be beginning work at Lift Station W with potholing and layout of new equipment concrete pads.
  • Depot Station: There is on-going building construction for this new 30-unit residential development with 6,000 square feet of retail space located at 95 E. 3rd Street (northwest corner of Depot & 3rd Streets).
  • Boys Ranch and Jackson Well Rehabilitation Project: Project awarded to Conco-West, Inc. for $1.28 million dollars. Project will bring online, two previously drilled wells to increase the City’s drinking water capacity. The Boys Ranch well and Jackson well are currently undergoing disinfection.   • New Main Avenue Well Project: This project will construct a new building around the recently drilled well and provide the City with approximately 850 gallons per minute of additional drinking water. The construction contract was awarded to Conco West Construction for $1,603,500. Construction began on May 14, 2018. The well pedestal was poured and utilities are being installed under the building pad. For more information please check the following link:
  • Hale Avenue Extension Project: City Council certified the Final Environmental Impact Report (FEIR) and adopted the Hale Avenue Plan Line on August 23, 2017. The Hale Avenue Extension Project design is currently being finalized and right of way acquisition with willing sellers has begun. Staff is currently negotiating with the remaining owners. Please click on the following link for more information:
  • Monterey Sewer Trunk Line to Gilroy Project: The project proposes to construct a new parallel sewer trunk line from the Harding/Highland intersection to Renz Road in Gilroy. Design plans have surpassed the 30% level and have been reviewed by the stakeholders. The designs will now be elevated to a 65% completion level. Construction of the parallel sewer trunk is currently not funded. The draft alignment can be found at
