Electronic Waste

Overview

The following electronics often contain heavy metals like lead, cadmium, copper, and chromium:
  • Calculators
  • Cell phones
  • Compact disc players
  • Computers
  • Microwave ovens
  • Printers
  • Radios
  • Stereo equipment
  • Telephones
  • Televisions and computer monitors
  • VCRs
To prevent these materials from polluting our groundwater, streams, and wildlife, the State of California has made it illegal to place electronic items in the garbage. See a complete list of wastes that may not be disposed of in your garbage can and get more information about their safe disposal and recycling from the Santa Clara County's Household Hazardous Waste website or print out our E-Waste Brochure (PDF) - a handy guide to the proper disposal of electronic waste.
